Boasting over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, we are greeted by the perfect climate of warm summers and mild winters. Where to go in the Algarve

Amazingly, some of the best beaches in the Algarve are completely off the tourist radar, so let’s explore the unexplored and discover where to go in the Algarve to get away from the bustling summer crowds…

The Heart of the Algarve Coast

Situated at the heart of the Algarve coastline, Praia de Albandeira is a tiny, secluded beach with pristine white sands. With few visitors, it is a place to relax and unwind in the shadow of the spectacular cliff faces. With a rustic beach bar nearby, it is the sort of hidden spot that soon becomes our own secret getaway.

The Home of the Algarve’s Surf and Water Sporting Activities

Heading east, we discover the Praia do Barril, a blue-flag beach on the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve. A miniature train takes you over the marshes of this protected habitat and past an amazing Anchor Graveyard created by the tuna-fishing boats that once docked here. Strong winds make this beach popular with surfers and wind sailors – making for a vibrant nightlife as the sun goes down.

    The Algarve’s Best Beach?

In the west, Praia da Marinha was recently nominated as one of the 10 best beaches in Europe by the Michelin Guide. Surely not to be a Portuguese secret for much longer, it lies at the bottom of a flight of stone steps that reward you with crystal clear waters perfect for diving and snorkelling – with frequent boat trips offering the chance to explore the rocky caves.
